Balancing Act

As a single parent of 2 teenage children, working a 9-5, owning a business, spending time with family, prayer time, gym time, reading time, blogging time, studying time, making sure the home is maintained and kept and don't forget time for my "oh so popping" social life (sarcasim intended) it doesn't come as a surprise that I often feel like I'm doing a balancing act!

It has become extremely important for me to learn to maintain balance in my life.  I have come to find when life seems out of control and I have endless demands tugging at me from all directions, it's easy to feel overwhelmed, fatigued - and just plain ole stressed out!

Believe it or not, balancing life doesnt require momumental changes. It's not necessary to cut things out.  You don't have to quit your job, abandon your family and escape to a desserted island in order to feel peaceful and happy. (althought at times I have wanted to do just that)  The truth of the matter is, true balance is something that starts within you first and foremost - no matter what else is happening in your outer life circumstances.  Starting off the day the right way is crucial.  Prioritzing, making lists, delegating, and setting boundaries are also extremely beneficial.  Here are a few other suggestions to maintaing balance in your life.

1) Shut Out the Noise!-

For those of you who don't know what that means; it's called "Quiet Time".  The first thing that we often tend to sacrifice when  life gets hectic is our personal time. Instead, we devote all of our energy and attention to caring for others, multi-tasking, meeting responsibilities and "being productive." Women in particular tend to be guilty of this.  The consequence of this is over time we become void of energy and we begin to feel more and more burdened by our responsibilities.

To live a more balanced life, quiet time by yourself is ESSENTIAL.  I know, someone reading this right now is saying, "when and where am I going to find a way to do that?".  The truth is, you may have a hard time believing that you have any time available for yourself.  I am encouraging you to make time!  It's amazing what happens when you consistently make time for yourself.  You will begin to find yourself feeling happier and more energetic, your focus improves, and you are more effective and present within your tasks.  Also, you may even find that you still have time to get plenty done.  Just a few minutes spent sitting quietly in prayer or meditation, quieting your mind or reading a book can do wonders in transforming stress into peace and happiness.

2) Do You!

Beyond making time for things you enjoy, there are other ways to nurture and love yourself on a daily basis. Getting a full 8 hours of sleep (or as much as you personally need) is a great start, as well as eating nutritious food, exercising daily and speaking kindly to yourself.  I enjoy pampering myself with long hot bubble baths.  It may mean treating yourself to a manicure or pedicure. Pamper yourself.  Self Care is another very important aspect to finding balance in life.

Have you ever noticed that when you're really tired or stressed, even the smallest problem can seem like a major catastrophe? On the contrary, when you're well-rested and centered, you find you are better capable to take on challenges. Caring for yourself is one sure way to consistently replenish your energy, inner peace & joy.  This equips you with the strength to handle whatever comes your way.

3)  Become like a Palm Tree!

This past month we have had some really powerful wind and rain storms.  In the town where I live many trees snapped and fell into the streets, on homes,  on cars and in many backyards wreaking major damage.

I was reminded this past Sunday that the Palm Tree in the Carribbean is a tree that can withstand extremely strong winds.  It's very limber and yielding by nature of it's composition.  Strong winds may blow and blow however, the palm tree bends but doesn't break.

Are you aware that one of the biggest causes of stress is rigid expectations? Just stop and let that marinate for a second.  We are all guilty of doing this from time to time; we have these mental pictures of how our lives "should be" - and get really annoyed when our outer circumstances don't match up.  One of the greatest gifts you can give yourself is a flexible state of mind.  Simply learning how to detach from unrealistic expectations and go with the flow.

Once you have developed this, you've learned how to have a flexible mind-set and bend like a palm tree; you will find you are more capable to deal with crises and oppositions with greater ease.  You will no longer be working against a preconceived notion of how things "should be".  You will find you are able to tap into your creative problem-solving skills and take on the stresses of life without a lot of  frustration. Be like the palm tree that bends with the breeze - and you're much less likely to break!

These simple but powerful inner changes will make a world of difference in your state of well-being, but you may also want to examine your outer life circumstances to see if there are other small changes you can make to help support your inner work.  Remember it's all about balance.  We have to use wisdom.  If you do the inner work but continue to overbook yourself, fail to utilize good time management etc.,than more than likely you will continue to struggle with finding balance.

Practical Application:  This week take a close look at your life.  Examine what steps you can take to achieve more balance in your life. You might choose to let go of certain obligations that are no longer meaningful or enjoyable to you. Just because you agreed to sit on the board of a particular weekly group five years ago doesn't mean you have to keep doing it forever - especially if it's become a drain on your time and energy.  Grant yourself permission to let go of activities that no longer complement the lifestyle you desire,  Shut out the Noise, Do you, and Become Like a Palm Tree and you will create a space for greater fulfillment, joy, peace and balance!

Wellness Wednesday: 7 Benefits of Physical Activity

The following article was originally posted by a Beachbody Coach.  Beachbody is a company that sells various exercise programs.  Personally, I have used 3 of their programs: Slim in 6, Hip Hop Abs, and Turbo Jam.  Slim in 6 was the system that helped me lose 35lbs!  Hip Hop Abs & Turbo Jam are 2 I do because they are alot of fun and great ways to shed pounds while dancing.  I am not writing this to promote Beachbody programs.   If you are someone who's uninterested in workout videos, then join a gym, walk a trail, go swimming- but do something!  Begin to find ways to add 20-40 minutes of cardio into your routine at least 3-4 times each week.  Here's 7 Benefits to Get you Motivated...

You know exercise is good for you — but do you know how good? From boosting your mood to improving your sex life, find out how exercise can improve your life.

Want to feel better, have more energy and perhaps even live longer? Look no further than old-fashioned exercise.

The merits of regular physical activity — from preventing chronic health conditions to promoting weight loss and better sleep — are hard to ignore. And the benefits are yours for the taking, regardless of age, sex or physical ability. Need more convincing? Check out seven specific ways exercise can improve your life.

1. Exercise improves your mood.

Need to blow off some steam after a stressful day? A workout at the gym or a brisk 30-minute walk can help you calm down.

Physical activity stimulates various brain chemicals that may leave you feeling happier and more relaxed than you were before you worked out. You'll also look better and feel better when you exercise regularly, which can boost your confidence and improve your self-esteem. Regular physical activity can even help prevent depression.

2. Exercise combats chronic diseases.

Worried about heart disease? Hoping to prevent osteoporosis? Physical activity might be the ticket.

Regular physical activity can help you prevent — or manage — high blood pressure. Your cholesterol will benefit, too. Regular physical activity boosts high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or "good," cholesterol while decreasing triglycerides. This one-two punch keeps your blood flowing smoothly by lowering the buildup of plaques in your arteries.

And there's more. Regular physical activity can help you prevent type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis and certain types of cancer.

3. Exercise helps you manage your weight.

Want to drop those excess pounds? Trade some couch time for walking or other physical activities.

This one's a no-brainer. When you engage in physical activity, you burn calories. The more intense the activity, the more calories you burn — and the easier it is to keep your weight under control. You don't even need to set aside major chunks of time for working out. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Walk during your lunch break. Do jumping jacks during commercials. Better yet, turn off the TV and take a brisk walk. Dedicated workouts are great, but physical activity you accumulate throughout the day helps you burn calories, too.

4. Exercise boosts your energy level.

Winded by grocery shopping or household chores? Don't throw in the towel. Regular physical activity can leave you breathing easier.

Physical activity delivers oxygen and nutrients to your tissues. In fact, regular physical activity helps your entire cardiovascular system — the circulation of blood through your heart and blood vessels — work more efficiently. Big deal? You bet! When your heart and lungs work more efficiently, you'll have more energy to do the things you enjoy.

5. Exercise promotes better sleep.

Struggling to fall asleep? Or stay asleep? It might help to boost your physical activity during the day.

A good night's sleep can improve your concentration, productivity and mood. And you guessed it — physical activity is sometimes the key to better sleep. Regular physical activity can help you fall asleep faster and deepen your sleep. There's a caveat, however. If you exercise too close to bedtime, you may be too energized to fall asleep. If you're having trouble sleeping, you might want to exercise earlier in the day.

6. Exercise can put the spark back into your sex life.

Are you too tired to have sex? Or feeling too out of shape to enjoy physical intimacy? Physical activity to the rescue.

Regular physical activity can leave you feeling energized and looking better, which may have a positive effect on your sex life. But there's more to it than that. Regular physical activity can lead to enhanced arousal for women, and men who exercise regularly are less likely to have problems with erectile dysfunction than are men who don't exercise — especially as they get older.

7. Exercise can be — gasp — fun!

Wondering what to do on a Saturday afternoon? Looking for an activity that suits the entire family? Get physical!

Physical activity doesn't have to be drudgery. Take a ballroom dancing class. Check out a local climbing wall or hiking trail. Push your kids on the swings or climb with them on the jungle gym. Plan a neighborhood kickball or touch football game. Find a physical activity you enjoy, and go for it. If you get bored, try something new. If you're moving, it counts!

Are you convinced? Good. Start reaping the benefits of regular physical activity today!

Letting Go

Holding on to tradition.
Clinching to a comfort zone.
Remaining on familiar ground
Feels safe here.
Not much to risk.

Only, lately, it doesn't feel so comfortable,
This space I've occupied no longer feels like home.

Time to move on.
Time to cut off.
Time to break away.
Time to be set free.
It's Time to let go.

Setting my sights on higher levels, new opportunities, & amazing adventures.
Time for growth, time for expansion, time to take risks, it's time for a change!

In order to fully reach our God-given potential and reap all the blessings God has in store, it's sometimes necessary to let go of some things we hold on to that no longer serve us a purpose.  This letting go process may vary depending on where we are in life and what we desire to achieve.  We may need to let go of negative thought patterns, unrealistic ideals we hold ourselves to, toxic relationships, reckless habits, meaningless routines, pointless conversations or unecessary associations.

It's time to let go!

Philippians 3:13,14.. forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press!
